Clinical hypnotherapy

How clinical hypnosis can help alleviate pelvic conditions

Clinical hypnosis is a therapeutic technique that uses guided relaxation and focused attention to help people enter a calm, concentrated state. In this state, the mind becomes more receptive to helpful suggestions and new ways of responding to sensations, stress, and habits. Contrary to common myths, hypnosis does not involve losing control; patients remain aware and actively engaged throughout the process. It is widely used in healthcare to support the management of pain, stress, anxiety, and other physical symptoms. For pelvic complaints, clinical hypnosis can be a valuable complement to pelvic physiotherapy.

Because the pelvic floor muscles are closely connected to the nervous system and stress responses, relaxation and mental focus can help reduce muscle overactivity, pain sensitivity, and protective tension. Hypnosis can support patients in learning to relax the pelvic floor, calm the nervous system, and change unhelpful pain or fear patterns. Combined with physiotherapy, this approach addresses both the physical and nervous system aspects of pelvic dysfunction, supporting more effective and lasting recovery.

Chronic pain & tension management

Chronic pelvic pain is often associated with tension and overactivity in the pelvic floor muscles in both women and men. Stress and persistent pain can keep these muscles in a constant state of tightening, which may increase discomfort. Clinical hypnotherapy helps calm the nervous system and promotes deep relaxation, making it easier for the pelvic floor to release tension. By addressing both stress and pain responses, hypnotherapy can support pelvic physiotherapy in reducing pain.

Vaginismus and sexual dysfunction

Vaginismus and other forms of sexual dysfunction are often influenced by involuntary pelvic floor muscle tightening, anxiety, or past negative experiences. Hypnotherapy can help by promoting relaxation, reducing fear or anticipation of pain, and improving awareness and control of the pelvic floor muscles. When combined with pelvic physiotherapy, it can support gradual desensitization, reduce muscle guarding, and help restore comfort and confidence during intimacy.

Childbirth & pelvic related trauma

Persistent pelvic symptoms can sometimes be linked to past traumatic experiences, including difficult or traumatic childbirth. These experiences may leave the nervous system in a heightened protective state, contributing to pelvic pain and muscle tension. Hypnotherapy can help process these experiences in a safe and supportive way, calming the nervous system and reducing the body’s stress response. This can support healing and improve the effectiveness of pelvic physiotherapy treatments.

Which conditions can benefit the most from clinical hypnotherapy for pelvic health?

“Am I a good fit for hypnotherapy?”

If you have a psychiatric condition, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, or a complex personality disorder, hypnosis could be a useful tool, but only when provided by an adequate medical professional: a psychiatrist or psychologist. We only offer hypnotherapy as an adjunt to pelvic physiotherapy in people with chronic pelvic disorders who do not have serious psychiatric conditions.
Patients with epilepsia are also unfortunately not treatable with hypnotherapy. If you are not sure if you’re well suited for hypnotherapy, ask us.

What to expect during a session

Clinical hypnosis perinatal physio
  1. A clinical hypnotherapy session typically lasts about two hours* and begins with a thorough intake conversation. During this time, we discuss what you are experiencing, how it affects your daily life, and what your goals for treatment are. This helps ensure the session is tailored to your specific needs and that we approach your concerns in a safe and supportive way.

  2. Next, you will receive a clear explanation of what hypnosis is and what it is not. Many people have misconceptions about hypnosis, so we take time to explain how it works and answer any questions you may have. We may also do a brief exercise to check how easily you allow yourself to enter a focused and relaxed state, which helps guide the session.

  3. During the session itself, you will be gently guided into a hypnotic state of deep relaxation and focused attention. In this state, we can work on techniques that support your goals, such as reducing tension, calming the nervous system, or changing unhelpful patterns. You will also learn self-hypnosis techniques that you can use at home to help manage stress, relax the pelvic floor, or support your recovery in daily life.

  4. Depending on your symptoms and goals, we may also explore additional therapeutic tools, such as hypnotic regression, which can help identify and process experiences that may be contributing to current symptoms. The aim is to provide you with practical tools and insights that support both your physical and emotional wellbeing. Please note that regression doesn't necessarily mean that you return to an accurate memory, or to a "past life", whatever your thoughts are on the subject. We're working with your beliefs of what could have happened and how you have processed the experience.

Generally 1 to 3 sessions are needed to reach your goal. This is not a long term treatment.
